EN 590 can look like a wall of numbers and ISO codes. Strip the jargon away and it is simply a promise about how diesel will behave. Here is the standard in plain terms — what each headline property does, and why it matters to the engine burning the fuel.
Think of it as a quality certificate
EN 590 is the European rulebook for automotive diesel. When fuel is described as “EN 590”, it is a shorthand promise that the diesel will run cleanly and safely in a modern engine and its emission-control equipment. Everything in the specification exists to make that promise measurable.
Cetane number — how eagerly it ignites
Cetane is to diesel what octane is to petrol, but it works the opposite way round: it measures how readily the fuel ignites under compression. EN 590 sets a minimum of 51. Higher cetane means the fuel lights quickly and evenly, which you feel as smoother running, easier cold starts and lower emissions. Low-cetane fuel ignites late and rough.
Sulphur — the clean-air number
This is the one that defines the modern grade. EN 590 caps sulphur at 10 mg/kg — 10 parts per million, hence “10ppm” or ultra-low-sulphur diesel (ULSD). Low sulphur keeps the air cleaner and, just as importantly, protects the catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters that modern engines depend on. High-sulphur fuel quietly destroys that equipment.
Cold-flow — will it still pour when it’s cold?
Diesel contains waxes that thicken as temperatures drop. Two figures describe this: cloud point (when wax first appears) and cold filter plugging point (when wax blocks the fuel filter and the engine stops). This matters far less in tropical Singapore than in a European winter, but it is why diesel is graded by climate and season.
Density — the energy in the tank
EN 590 keeps density between 820 and 845 kg/m³. Density relates to how much energy each litre carries, which affects fuel economy and how volumes are measured and priced. It is also one of the quickest checks that a parcel is what it claims to be.
Lubricity — protecting the pump
The refining that removes sulphur also removes some of diesel’s natural slipperiness. Because fuel injection pumps rely on the fuel itself for lubrication, EN 590 sets a lubricity limit and additives restore it. Without it, pumps and injectors wear out early.
FAME — the biodiesel share
EN 590 permits up to 7% FAME (biodiesel) by volume. It is a routine part of the blend, but it matters for long-term storage stability and for older engines with lower blend tolerances.
