For anyone buying diesel in volume, understanding EN 590 is not optional. It is the specification that determines whether the fuel will perform, stay compliant, and protect the engines it runs. This guide breaks down what EN 590 is, the properties that matter when you buy, and the questions a serious buyer should ask before committing to a contract.

What EN 590 is

EN 590 is the European standard for automotive diesel fuel, set by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). It defines the physical and chemical properties diesel must meet to be sold across the European Union and the many other markets that have adopted it. In practice it is a quality benchmark: fuel certified to EN 590 is compatible with modern engines and their emission-control systems, including diesel particulate filters. The standard is revised as environmental regulation tightens.

The properties that matter when you buy

When you buy diesel, you are really buying a set of performance characteristics. These are the ones worth understanding.

  • Cetane number (min. 51). The diesel equivalent of octane — it measures ignition quality. A higher cetane number means quicker, cleaner ignition: smoother running, easier cold starts and lower emissions.
  • Sulphur content (max. 10 mg/kg). The defining feature of the modern grade — “10ppm” ultra-low-sulphur diesel. Low sulphur protects catalytic converters and particulate filters; high sulphur poisons them and leads to expensive damage.
  • Cold-flow properties. Diesel thickens in the cold. Cloud point and cold filter plugging point (CFPP) describe when wax begins to form and when it blocks a filter. The right grade must suit the climate and season of use.
  • Density (820–845 kg/m³ at 15°C). Density affects energy content per litre — within the range, denser fuel typically carries more energy and delivers better economy.
  • Lubricity (max. 460 µm). Ultra-low-sulphur refining strips natural lubricity, which is restored with additives to protect fuel pumps and injectors.
  • FAME / biodiesel (max. 7.0% v/v). The permitted biodiesel blend. Relevant for storage stability and for engines with blend limits.

Why availability and verification matter as much as price

In international diesel trading, the biggest risk is rarely the specification on paper — it is whether the product physically exists, sits where it is claimed to sit, and actually meets that specification. A credible supplier can evidence the product and will facilitate independent inspection at the appropriate stage. A quoted price means little without a real, verifiable parcel behind it.

The buyer’s checklist

Before you sign, get clear answers to these:

  • What is the exact grade and sulphur level — EN 590 10ppm, or something looser?
  • Can you see a recent certificate of quality against the contracted specification?
  • What is the delivery basis — STS, CIF or FOB — and which terminal or port?
  • Is the seller willing to support an independent inspection (SGS or equivalent) at the right stage?
  • What are the volume, laycan and documentation terms?
  • Is the counterparty a genuine supplier with a track record, or an intermediary passing paper?
